Becoming a Portent

In Psalm 23, a familiar passage for many, David shows all the ways God is our Good Shepherd. Now check out this verse from Psalm 71-

“I am have become like a portent to many, but you are my strong refuge. My mouth is filled with your praise, declaring your splendor all day long.” Psalm 71:7

The psalmist speaks of becoming like a portent. This word wasn’t familiar, so I looked it up-

“A solemn sign or testimony to others of all God has done.“

A lifetime of blessing. Do we recognize this in our own lives? Hasn’t God been a refuge and strength to us? Hasn’t He been faithful and good? How many times has he delivered us and come in our time of need?

I’ve met some who never seem satisfied. The grass is always greener somewhere else- they are not content in the green pasture God’s given them. Complaining, they only see the negative.

Friends, griping is contagious- it’s easy to fall into this trap of discontentment, I know- especially now when we are in a unique space and often feel inconvenienced by a new set of rules.

Perhaps we’re too busy to BE STILL to notice? EVERYTHING is a blessing, including our very next breath!

Next time we are prone to complain, let’s remember the Psalmist. Replace ungratefulness with hearts of gratitude for what we DO have. Let’s remind ourselves of our blessings and be portents together!
