“Keep me as the apple of your eye.”  Psalm 17:8a

Ever wonder what this verse is about? I always understood “apple of your eye” to be something special, yet never knowing exactly what the apple of one’s eye is!

Upon a bit of further research, most scholars believe this verse is about protection. The apple of one’s eye refers to the pupil- the dark center where light enters.

Just as we are protective of our eyes, God is protective of us, too. We need to be careful not to assume if we are experiencing pain or trouble, (as in a betrayal, or anything else for that matter) somehow we’ve missed God’s protection.

His purposes may be far greater than just helping us avoid pain. Sometimes, he protects us by helping us escape, but other times his protection shows as he guides us through difficult things.

Regardless, we can know God’s faithfulness to us is unchanging. If his word establishes we are apples of his eye, then we can rest assured of his protection, whatever it looks like!

Next time you take a look in the mirror, putting on mascara, check out the apples of your eyes and be reminded of God’s love and protection for YOU.
