Knowing Your Worth

Years ago when I first began counseling, my therapist would often say, “Debra, you know your worth.”

This statement would always cause confusion and I would think to myself, “No. I really don’t know my worth. If I did, I would be standing up for myself.”

In a recent conversation, I was surprised at my quick response to a similar statement. “Yes. I am worth far more than rubies.”

What prompted me to say such a thing? An onlooker might call me conceited!

But guess what? YOU are worth far more than rubies, too! God’s Word declares it!

Proverbs 31 describes the perfect woman who we may think does not exist, but one we aspire to.

The Message version states, “worth more than diamonds”. In either translation, the takeaway is we are PRECIOUS to God, and nothing compares to His view of us.

So what gave me this change of thinking from feeling worthless to a person of value? The contrast is at opposite ends of the spectrum!

I had to find ways to replace lies with truth. I began memorizing scripture affirming what God said about my character, and had to believe the truth of His Word.

I began with Proverbs 31:25.  “I am clothed in strength and dignity. I can laugh at the days to come.” I repeated this verse multiple times—daily, out loud, and added more scriptures over the course of the year.

With each new verse, as the Holy Spirit whispered truth over me, my wrong thinking was replaced, re-establishing worth and value.

Have you been feeling down about yourself? Do you say negative things or get stuck in comparison? Is it time for you to replace lies with truth and realize how valuable you are?

It is humbling, yet freeing, to realize God’s unconditional love and understand His perspective. Go to His Word. You are worth far more than rubies.
