Grace and Space

It makes sense to me that truth can be learned only when one is clear-minded. Brains need to be healthy in order to grasp truth and apply it.

In The Solace of Fierce Landscapes, Belden Lane gives an additional thought and suggests, “certain truths can be learned, it seems, only as one is sufficiently emptied, frightened, or confused.” It gave me something to think about.

I’m currently reading The Sacred Year, by Michael Yankoski. My Breathing Room sisters gather weekly to dig deeper spiritually. We possess a likemindedness of desiring stillness, silence, and solitude.  We crave hearing God’s voice amidst cultural chaos.

Anyone with me? Sometimes do you find yourself saying, “Stop the world, I want to get off?”

What I find in discussions with other women experiencing trauma from betrayal is that none of us think clearly in the middle of betrayal. Our brains feel foggy, fried, and frazzled.

How can we expect ourselves to make important decisions when we can’t remember what we had for breakfast or where we left the car keys?

GRACE. We need to give ourselves grace. But even when traumatized, we still need to be able to think clearly to make wise decisions. Sometimes the best thing for us is to create space so we can heal.

Turn off the noise. Create margin in order to spend time being alone, in stillness and silence.

Doing this allows us to hear God’s voice speaking truth, so we can make those necessary decisions we can’t put on hold.

I’m trying to put it into practice. Quieting. Listening. Receiving.

Sometimes we are wrapped up in busyness, to avoid feelings or emotions and it takes longer for healing to happen. Getting well needs prioritization. Let’s do this.

  1. Great post, Debra. I’m going to ponder that quote: “certain truths can be learned, it seems, only as one is sufficiently emptied, frightened, or confused.” Maybe it will help me not be as frustrated or scared of those times. Instead, I can ask the Holy Spirit what he’s trying to teach me. I also think quiet, listening, and receiving are important. Maybe those things come next and we’ll hear the Spirit speak during those times. ~Robyn
