Bring a Bold Request

Distraught, fearful, and hopeless. He tore his clothes and put on sackcloth. This was King Hezekiah’s reaction after he heard what the field commander said. Soon after, he received a threatening letter sent by the Assyrian king. Judah’s future did not look promising, to say the least.

Even though it appeared all odds were against him, Hezekiah did not give up. He took the letter to the temple and spread it out before the Lord. He prayed, “O Lord Almighty, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. Give ear, O Lord, and hear; open your eyes, O Lord, and see; listen to all the words Sennacherib has said to insult the living God.” Isaiah 37:16-17

He went on to describe the devastation the Assyrian king had done to other countries, then finished his prayer with, “Now, O Lord our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all kingdoms on earth may know that you alone, O Lord, are God.” Isaiah 37:20

The next morning, when the people woke up, 185,000 bodies of Assyrian men lay dead, slaughtered by the angel of the Lord.

If Hezekiah’s God, (the same God we believe in) is this big, shouldn’t we be praying as boldly as Hezekiah?
