In the Stillness

I’ve been trying to consciously make an effort for solitude, silence, and stillness. The way to clearly hear God’s voice is when I’m still enough to listen.

In 1 Kings 19, evil men were in pursuit of Elijah. He was fearful and on the run. His mind was chock-full of cares and concerns, but where did God meet him?

In the wind? No.

Earthquake? No.

Fire? No.

Silence? Yes.

God met him in silence.

As we experience trauma from betrayal, most of us cry out  for clarity and direction, yet we seldom completely still ourselves long enough to hear God speak.

Could it be we receive answers when we do?

“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10

It’s a command—not a request. Be. Still.

  1. In those situations, we usually get to that place of silence sooner or later. It’s in the middle of the night, when everyone else in the house is asleep, but the stressed-out person is lying there starting at the ceiling. Anyone with an ounce of sense is finally going to listen at that point.
