Refined in Affliction

During a quiet time I was reminded how God refines us through fire. We are purified and sanctified when we go through hard stuff. To refine silver, when heated, the dross comes to the top and gets poured off, but we are refined in a furnace of affliction.

God‘s purpose in heartache, betrayal, whatever difficulty we go through, is to draw us closer to him and sanctify us to be more like him. I’m memorizing this verse and hope you’ll join me in claiming this truth.

“So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord, who is the spirit, makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.” 2 Corinthians 3:18 NLT

  1. I love this image of suffering as a refining fire. I remember reading about a man who did that kind of work, removing the dross again and again, who was asked, “How do you know when you’re finished?” He responded, “When I can see my face in it.” 😉
